How to choose a career for yourself? Isn’t it similar to the question “How to know Yourself?”

The typical answer to “How to know yourself?” is introspection.

Now, how to introspect?

Again, how to observe yourself? By observing yourself. By observing your skills and daily routine things to know your interests.

Now let’s assume that you know your interests, but how to know that your interest offers the best career? Or say, if your interest leads you to multiple fields/domains, which is best for you?

Are you Finding yourself surrounded by lots of questions? Don’t worry, let’s solve them one by one:

So, start by making a list of what you are good at, which means your ability and skills. Also, include your hobbies and things that attract you, i.e., for example, you are attracted towards a luxurious lifestyle. So it would be best if you had a career that offers you a high-income source. It may take days, months, or maybe years to discover yourself, but the more time you give yourself, the more you know about yourself. If you initially find difficulties observing yourself, start observing other people around you, identify their skills and ability, and then apply the same procedure to yourself. Remember, don’t confuse observing people by judging people Xd.

The most important thing I want to say is that don’t confine your interest to what your surroundings offer you. It would be best to explore multiple things to know exactly what you are interested in. And by this, you will not only know your interest, but you will also understand why you’re interested. You won’t be a part of the rat race because you will know why and where you are running.

So, by now, you may have a list of your skills and abilities, and maybe you would have figured out multiple careers for yourself based on your interest. So, at first, you were blank (before introspection), then messed up (but now you are ahead of many people, keep it up!!). Let’s solve this mess out. You will do this by yourself as well; I will tell you some factors you should consider while choosing your career:

Step 1 – The reason behind choosing a particular job:

These underlying points might be the basis for your selection-

  • The job seems attractive to you

We often find some jobs too attractive because they offer good packages or maybe due to some other reasons and we work hard for that and get that dream job. But after some time, we don’t feel satisfied because attraction doesn’t last for a long time (if you know what I mean xd). So, ask yourself if your motivation for the job you dream of is temporary or permanent.

  • The people you are surrounded by are choosing that career, and you are unaware of other opportunities.

There is no doubt that we all are affected by our surroundings. Sometimes we blindly do the things our friends or our known people are doing without giving our thought. But the world is much larger than your surroundings, and you should at least give yourself a chance to explore it.

  • You feel that your skills and ability make you fit for that role.

It is said that just because you are good at something doesn’t mean you should do it. It would help if you also enjoyed the work you are doing. Sometimes it might happen that you are not enjoying your work, but there are chances that you are not enjoying some phases of it, and the overall process as a whole is giving you happiness.

Step 2 – Field of work

It would help if you reduced the choices from your list. Once you decide on the area in which you want to work, consider all the options in that area. For example, if you are going to work in the medical field, you can work as a doctor, nurse, and doctor’s department. If you are interested in academic writing, you should think about all possible ideas in this area.

Step 3 – Skills required in that career Vs. your skills

Compare your overall development skills and technical skills with those required in that career. Even if you don’t have the required skill set but have skills to develop any skills, you can pursue any of the careers you want to.

If you still find yourself confused, you should ask yourself how you want to see yourself in the future, like what things you want to be rich in the future and choose the career that leads to that goal.

Since I hail from an engineering background, I present to you a table that will give you a fair idea about career opportunities and the skills required for the same in engineering. I hope this helps you to narrow down your choices.

Finally, I would say that it’s okay to find yourself lost regarding your career, but you should never stop exploring. You should try different fields in which you think you might be interested, and if your interest doesn’t last, try something new.

The most crucial point is that, at every point, you should know what you are doing and why you are doing it, and if you are not doing something, then why you are not doing that thing.

The clearer your thoughts are about yourself, the better and simpler your life will be.
