Net present value (NPV) is a financial term used to describe the present value of future cash flows. It is often considered an alternative to calculating benefit-cost ratios. The concept was developed by Irving Fisher in his 1930 book "The Theory of Interest", where he argued that the net present value could be applied to any investment decision, and not just limited to investment decisions for new projects or companies
