I need some mentorship in Product Management and how to land a job
Hi Emenike. To be a good product manager, there are some skills that you should inculcate. Entrepreneurial Thinking: You should think like an entrepreneur and understand the market, customer needs so well, and how your structural thinking and product can help society and satisfy customer needs in general. Product & User Sense: You should be able to understand the behavioral patterns of a customer and you should use the product yourself to understand the pros and cons of the product. Cross-domain Knowledge: You should be aware of different domains and have an insight into them, that would help you think diversely. Strong Technical Background: You need a few skills and a strong technical background like Data Analysis, software development, and Microsoft Excel. Ability to Execute: Just having a vision isn’t enough, you should be able to execute what you think and plan. A Strong Innovation Mindset: You should think out of the box and be different from the rest in your domain for your product to outshine and do well in the market, satisfying the customer needs and wants. I would recommend you to watch this video on “Tips to become a good product manager” https://seekho.ai/video/what-are-some-tips-to-become-a-good-product-manager/VI-131-13031
Product management is an organizational role that requires the manager to look after each and every step of the product life cycle. From development to positioning to pricing of the product everything is taken care of by the Product management team. Product managers act as consumer representatives in the organisation and put forth consumer needs and wants. They make sure that the consumer choices are given priority in the organisation. To have a successful career in product management it is important to first gather some formal education in management studies. Once you have completed your undergraduate studies you can start your professional career as an associate Product manager. As an associate product manager you will have the responsibility to determine what projects to undertake and manage various product outcomes. You will have to coordinate with stakeholders and make sure products are delivered on time. These activities will enable you to acquire the relevant knowledge and experience to go ahead in your career as a product manager. To be able to land a job it is very important to be well prepared for the interview and do all the required research beforehand. The job interviewers often check if you have the competency for the role of a product manager and whether you actually have done the things you mention on your resume. To be prepared on the types of behavioural questions and product related questions you will be asked during the interview, you must go through the Product management- cracking PM interviews short videos. As a product manager it is important to always identify the user’s persona, understand their goals and desires, analyse the competitors in the market and create products that can lead to a better experience for the consumers and satisfy their wants and needs.
